What kind of game is this?

Boss Town Tycoon is an idle business game. You open shops, they make money on their own, and you spend that money on more shops. The fun is in watching a quiet street turn into a busy town: buses drive past, customers queue at the counters, and every new business appears as a building in the scene above your list. Later the town grows past airlines and rockets into a Moon Base, a Mars Colony and finally a Galaxy Network.

It suits short visits. The game keeps earning while you are away (up to 8 hours), so a few minutes in the morning and a few in the evening is plenty. Mayor Mo, the friendly mayor in a top hat, pops up with a tip whenever something new unlocks, so younger players are never lost.

How to play on a phone

Everything is a tap. The bottom bar has six tabs: Shops, Managers, Upgrades, Investors, Missions and Town. On the Shops tab, each business has a big orange button that unlocks it or buys one more. The x1, x10, x100 and MAX switch above the list changes how many you buy per tap. The lightning button at the top starts Rush Hour, which doubles all profits for 2 minutes and then needs 10 minutes to recharge. On a computer you can click everything the same way.

Watch the street, too. Things marked TAP! are worth tapping: lucky surprises, the gift van and shops waiting to be collected.

Your first ten minutes

When we played from a fresh start, the opening went like this. Your times will be close if you keep spending as soon as you can afford something.

  1. Unlock the Lemonade Stand for $4 and keep buying stands. The tenth stand doubles its profit.
  2. The Tea Stall opens within the first minute. Then hire Lily Lemon, the first manager, so the lemonade keeps flowing without tapping.
  3. Bakery, Pizza Place and Toy Shop follow quickly. In our run the Supermarket was open after about two minutes.
  4. Hire a manager for each shop as soon as you can afford one. A shop without a manager stops after every sale and earns nothing while you are away.
  5. By five minutes we had four managed shops making about $540K a second, and the Grand Hotel ($14.9M) was the next big goal.

After six minutes, selling only gives x1.22. Too early!

Each business gets faster or richer when you own enough of it. At 10 you get double profit, at 25, 50 and 100 it works twice as fast, and bigger bonuses wait at 150, 250, 500 and all the way up to 1,000. The small bar under each shop shows how close the next bonus is, so it is often worth buying a few more of an old shop just to reach that line.

Managers, upgrades and Rush Hour

Managers are the most important thing you can buy. They run a shop nonstop and they are the only shops that earn while you are away. That last part matters: if you open a shiny new business and leave without hiring its manager, your away earnings will not include it.

Upgrades multiply profit by three. Most are for one shop (Fresh Lemons for the stand, Golden Teapot for tea, Stone Oven for pizza and so on), and a few, such as City Fame, boost every shop at once. Buy the cheap ones as soon as they appear.

Save Rush Hour for when you are actually watching. Two minutes of double money is best used right after you have bought a big batch of shops.

Lucky surprises and the daily gift

Every minute or two something fun appears in the street. Tap it:

The Town tab holds the Daily Town Gift. Open it once a day to stamp your card. The seven stamps are shown in advance: 10 minutes of money, a free Rush Hour, a briefcase shower, 30 minutes of money, a rainbow balloon, a truck of free shops and, on day seven, a town decoration. Missing a day never resets the card, so nobody has to feel bad about a busy week.

Missions, stars and Boss Ranks

The Missions tab lists town missions such as "Open a Toy Shop" or "Catch 3 lucky surprises". Each one pays cash and stars. Stars raise your Boss Rank, and every rank adds 5% to all your money forever and usually gives your town something new to look at.

After Galaxy Boss, every 150 more stars gives a new Galaxy Boss level and another 3%.

When to sell to investors

The Investors tab lets you sell your whole town and start again from a stall. You lose your cash, shops, managers and upgrades. You keep your investors, Board perks, stars, rank and decorations, and every investor makes all shops earn 2% more.

The screen shows "now earning" and "after selling" side by side. In our first game it offered only x1.22 after six minutes. Selling then would have thrown away a lot of progress for very little. The game's own advice is right: wait until the new number is at least double the current one. For most players that means letting the first town grow over a day or two, with a few long away sessions in between.

The Board Room: perks that last forever

New investor totals open seats on your Board: the first at 25 investors, then 150, 1,000, 5,000 and so on. Each seat lets you pick one perk, and your investors are never spent. Some of the best early picks:

What changed after testing

Boss Town Tycoon is played for long sessions before and after every update. Early tests showed that the middle of the game could feel quiet once the first big shops were open, so an update added the daily gift card (which never resets), Mayor Mo's tips, lucky surprises in the street, town missions with stars and the Board Room perks. The latest update made sure big numbers always fit on screen: your cash is shown in full on small phones, and the Rush Hour multiplier now sits in its own little x2 badge.

Frequently asked questions

Does Boss Town Tycoon keep earning when I close it?

Yes, for up to 8 hours (12 with the Night Shift perk). Only shops with a manager earn while you are away, so hire managers before you leave.

Do I lose everything when I sell to investors?

You lose cash, shops, managers and upgrades. You keep investors, Board perks, stars, Boss Rank and decorations, so each new town grows faster.

What happens if I miss a day of the daily gift?

Nothing bad. The card simply waits for you and the next stamp is still there.

Is it safe for kids?

Yes. There is no chat, no sign-up and nothing to buy with real money. All money in the game is pretend and earned by playing.

Where is my progress saved?

On your device, every few seconds. Clearing your browser data or switching devices starts a new town.
