Beat Buddies Guide: Build a Song, Find Secret Combos and Unlock Every Buddy

Beat Buddies is a music toy for kids. Drag cute, round buddies onto a stage and each one starts singing, drumming or beatboxing, always in time, so every mix sounds good. Our five-buddy song set off a secret combo called Starry Night. Here is how to build your own.

PLAY BEAT BUDDIES

Beat Buddies needs no reading, no rules and no wrong answers. There is a stage with seven spots, and below it a tray of buddies: red, yellow, blue, pink, round, tall and fluffy, each wearing something silly, like headphones, a cap or a tiny crown. Drag one onto the stage and it joins the song.

Because every loop is made to fit with every other loop, there is no way to make a bad song. That makes it a lovely first music game for small children, and a fun toy for grown-ups too.

Our first song

We pressed Let's Jam! and landed on the Sunny Jam stage: blue sky, green hills and a wooden floor. Simply opening a jam completed a Daily Fun task ("Jam on the Sunny Jam stage", +10 notes).

We built the song one buddy at a time:

  1. Thumpy (kick drum: "boom, boom, boom!") on the back row.
  2. Wubbo (a warm, wobbly synth bass) next to him.
  3. Twinkle (sparkly bells) from the Melody tab.
  4. Fluffy (soft, cosy cloud chords) from the Chords tab.
  5. Sparkle (shimmering chimes) from the Effects tab.

The moment Sparkle landed, the whole stage filled with stars and a banner appeared: SECRET COMBO! Starry Night. That earned 5 notes, plus another Daily Fun task ("Find any secret combo", +10). In under a minute we had gone from 10 notes to 25.

The lesson: use the category tabs (Beats, Bass, Melody, Chords, Voices, Effects). One buddy from each makes a full-sounding song, and that is also how most secret combos are found.
