Bolt Brigade Guide: Cover, Bosses and the Best Blaster to Buy

Bolt Brigade is a pop-out-and-duck blaster where you hide behind toy blocks and zap wind-up robots. The trick is not shooting more, it is ducking at the right moment. Here is everything we learned playing all 35 missions.

PLAY BOLT BRIGADE

The very first time we tried Bolt Brigade for this guide, we held a finger on the screen, let the blaster fire, and never let go. Mission 1-1 ended in under a minute with a "Knocked Out!" card, 4% accuracy and the tip: "Hide behind cover when bots glow red, and upgrade your blaster in the Armory." That tip is the whole game in one sentence.

Bolt Brigade is a cartoon cover shooter. You crouch behind a wall of chunky toy blocks while wind-up robots march around a play yard. Pop out, blast a few bots, duck before they shoot back, reload, repeat. There is no blood or scary stuff: beaten robots pop and drop coins, and the worst that happens to you is a bump on your health bar.

How to play on a phone

The controls changed after early testing (more on that below), and they are now very simple:

What you wantPhone or tabletComputer
Aim and shootTouch the screen. The circle follows your finger and the blaster fires by itselfHold the mouse button or Space to pop out, move the mouse to aim
Duck and reloadHold the blue COVER button, bottom rightLet go, or hold C or Shift
EMP blastTap the EMP button, bottom left, when it is chargedE
PauseII button, top leftEsc

Aim assist gently snaps the circle onto the nearest bot, so you do not need to be pixel-perfect. If your magazine runs empty, your hero ducks and reloads by themselves, which is safe but slow. It is better to duck on your own terms.

The one rule: duck on the red "!"

Every robot shows a red ! just before it fires. That is your cue. Hold COVER, wait for the shot to bonk off the blocks, then pop back out. Doing this is the difference between 1 star and 3 stars, because stars are all about how much health you finish with:

In our full run, once we ducked on every warning, most missions ended at 100% health. The game is generous once you learn that rhythm.

Your cover is not endless, though. Blocks take damage too, and Rollers (orange bots that charge at you) smash into it. The Barricade upgrade in the Armory makes cover tougher.

Meet the robots

RobotWhat it doesHow to handle it
ClankBasic red bot that fires bolts from behind coverEasy target. Shoot it between its shots
ZipperSmall yellow flyer, fast but fragileA couple of hits pops it. Do not let it chip at you
ShieldyBlue bot with a shield that soaks up hitsBreak the shield first, or use the Zap Rail, which shoots straight through
LobberGreen bot that throws grenades in an arcShoot the grenade in the air, or duck
SpotterPurple sniper standing far backHits hard (3 damage). Duck the moment you see its warning
RollerOrange bot that rushes your wallShoot it before it arrives. It damages your cover
BruteBig grey bot with lots of health that fires rocketsSave your EMP for it, then unload. Rockets can be shot down

Exploding barrels with a lightning sign are your friend. A shot into a barrel next to a group of bots does more than any blaster.

The five stages and their bosses

There are 35 missions in five stages of seven. The seventh mission of each stage is a boss.

StageMissionsBoss
Toy Yard1 to 7Crusher Crab
Dune Depot8 to 14Dune Roller
Frost Fort15 to 21Frost Titan
Neon Works22 to 28Volt Overlord
Sky Citadel29 to 35Sky Dread

Boss trick: bosses have glowing cores. After a boss attacks, its cores open up, and that is when to hit them. Shots on an open core do far more damage than shots on a closed one. Once every core is gone, keep shooting the boss's body to finish it. The body takes only a small amount of damage at that point, so it can feel slow; just keep firing and duck its attacks.

Where it got hard for us: mission 19 in Frost Fort. It mixes a far-away Spotter with Rollers, and we finished it three times on 2 stars (70 to 81% health) before getting into the habit of ducking for the sniper first and shooting the Rollers second. The Frost Titan (mission 21) and mission 33 in Sky Citadel also took a second try for 3 stars. Everything else went 3 stars first time once we were ducking properly.

The Armory: what to buy first

Coins come from every bot you pop, and the Coin Magnet gear adds 10% per level. Each blaster has four upgrades (Damage, Fire rate, Magazine, Reload), and the first level of each costs 90 coins.

BlasterCostBest for
Pea BlasterFreeAll-rounder, 12 shots
Buzz SMG450Fast spray with a 32-shot magazine, great against Zippers
Scatter Popper1100Seven pellets per shot, best up close
Zap Rail2200Huge single shots that go through cover and shields
Boom Tube3600Splash damage that smashes enemy cover

In our run we bought the Buzz SMG after mission 3, saved for the Zap Rail around mission 17, and picked up the Boom Tube at the very end. We never needed the Scatter Popper. The Zap Rail was the best buy: it deals with Shieldies and with bots hiding behind cover, and it is lovely on boss cores.

The Gear tab has four more upgrades: Armor (+2 max health), Barricade (+4 cover strength), EMP Burst (a stronger, faster-charging EMP) and Coin Magnet (+10% coins).

Tips for beginners

  1. Let go of the urge to keep shooting. Short bursts plus ducking win missions.
  2. Look for the red ! above bots. If you see two at once, duck straight away.
  3. Shoot grenades and rockets out of the air. It saves you a hit.
  4. Your EMP charges as you hit bots. Tap it when a Brute appears or when lots of bots crowd in. It stuns everything for a couple of seconds.
  5. Reload behind cover. Holding COVER refills your magazine, so duck before you are empty.
  6. Claim the Daily gift. Our first claim gave 60 coins, and the gifts grow if you come back on following days.

Tips for 3-star hunters

What we changed after testing

Bolt Brigade was tested over many versions before it reached its current form:

FAQ

Is Bolt Brigade violent?

It is cartoon action. You zap wind-up toy robots that pop and drop coins. There are no people, no blood and nothing scary, which is why it sits happily alongside our other action games for all ages.

How do I get 3 stars?

Finish the mission with 85% of your health or more. Duck every time a robot shows a red !, and upgrade Armor so you have more health to spare.

How many missions are there?

35, in five stages of seven: Toy Yard, Dune Depot, Frost Fort, Neon Works and Sky Citadel. Each stage ends with a boss. All 35 on 3 stars makes 105 stars in total.

Which blaster is the best?

For most players, the Zap Rail. It costs 2200 coins but shoots straight through cover and shields. The Buzz SMG is a great cheap first buy at 450.

Does my progress save?

Yes. Your missions, stars, coins and upgrades are saved on your device automatically, so you can close the game and carry on later.
